Group Retirement Plans
A group retirement plan gives employees a structured way to save through regular payroll contributions. Depending on the plan design, employers may also contribute—adding long-term value to the compensation offered by a farm, rural operation or small business.
-
A Group Registered Retirement Savings Plan is established through an employer, while each participating employee has their own individual RRSP account. Contributions are deducted through payroll and deposited into the employee’s account.
Eligible RRSP contributions may reduce taxable income, while investment growth is generally tax-deferred until money is withdrawn. Contributions remain subject to each employee’s available RRSP deduction limit.
-
An employer may choose to contribute to employees’ Group RRSP accounts, but employer contributions are not required in every plan design. A business may contribute a fixed amount, match a portion of employee contributions or offer employee-funded payroll deductions without an employer contribution.
The contribution structure should reflect the organization’s budget, compensation strategy and long-term goals. Employer contributions also have payroll and tax implications that should be reviewed when the plan is established.
-
A Deferred Profit Sharing Plan, or DPSP, allows an employer to share a portion of business profits with eligible employees. Only the employer contributes to a DPSP; employees cannot contribute directly.
Within the Chambers Plan FutureStep solution, the DPSP is available alongside the Group RRSP rather than as a stand-alone option. This can give an employer flexibility to make contributions based on business performance while encouraging longer-term employee commitment.
-
Participating employees can access investment choices intended for different levels of experience and involvement. These may include retirement-date funds, professionally structured asset-allocation funds and options for employees who prefer to build their own portfolios.
Online retirement-planning tools, educational materials, account statements and support services help employees understand their accounts and make more informed decisions. Investment values are not guaranteed and will vary according to the investments selected and market performance.

We have our group insurance through the Chamber of Commerce, and the experience has been excellent. Whenever I have a question, I always receive a prompt and helpful response—no question is ever treated as a silly one. The insurance is easy to understand and very user-friendly. We use it for both our family and our employees on the farm, and enrolling new employees is a simple, straightforward process. Kali has been exceptional to work with- knowledgeable, supportive, and always willing to help. I highly recommend their services.
